For her undergraduate thesis Lorena explored the formation of lobed stems within the pantropical lianescent genus Byttneria (Malvaceae s.l.). To understand whether all lobed stems in the genus were formed in a similar way, she carried ontogenetic studies from the primary to the secondary growth of some stems collected in field. She compared the results obtained in the ontogenetic analysis with sections of either young or adult stems of other species obtained from herbarium. In addition, based on the most recent phylogenies for Byttneria and three allied genera she studied the evolutionary pattern of lobed stems in the group and their possible correlation with habit evolution. Her work was published at the journal Annals of Botany and she defended her thesis at Facultad de Ciencias (UNAM) in 2022.
